I was watching a movie at home today, my cousin called and asked me to drop my dad off at his house for bbq and drinks. I took him over and went to check what they were barbecuing and it was huge cuts of the fish teikenepek. I haven't seen this fish in 20 years so I took a photo of it as it charred on the grill.
Chuukese are the only people I know that eat this fish. My dad claims that the Chamorros and Carolinian don't eat it because they don't know how to fish for it, but I rather think it's because they simply don't want to eat it. Eating this fish will you uncontrollable diarrhea. I haven't tested it for myself because it simply is not worth the risk. The fish meat is naturally oily, so the claim does make sense. Another evidence is in its name. Did you know the word "pek" in Teikenepek comes from a Pohnpeic word that means "to defacate"?
Here is the photo.
